“I WISH YOU KNEW” Short film PSA exploring trauma informed schools debuts

2021-10-06 12:00:00 - Greenville, NC - (PR Distribution™)

Greenville, NC - Almost every student, regardless of race, has been exposed to trauma. However, stress, and frightening situations are experienced more frequently by students of color, who have less access to protective resources.  It is hard for them to divorce themselves from events in their homes simply by stepping into the classroom –– especially due to the effects of historical trauma and ongoing racial injustice.

“I Wish You Knew” is a short film PSA from writer and director, Deborah J. Sheppard that highlights these significant circumstances and calls for more trauma-informed schools.

“This short film PSA is amplifying the conversation about how to recognize trauma in African American students and ways to address it,” said Sheppard. “It also empowers education and legislature systems to create a culture of awareness, respect and support for African American students.”

The film, captured by Director of Photography, Chris Charles, features debutant actors, Ramon Mabry, Latrell Lucas, Brianna Hardy, Deiya Staton, and host of others. As well as expert voices from education and legislation: Veteran educator, Reginald Barrett and NC House Representative, Kandie Smith.

Sponsors supporting the development of the film include The Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge and local community members. The release date for “I Wish You Knew” is Oct. 6, 2021.
