Arden Bement Jr. selected as Top Educational Director of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

Arden L. Bement Jr., Distinguished Professor of Nuclear Engineering Emeritus for Purdue University was just recently selected as Top Educational Director of the Year for 2019 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and commitment to government, industry and academia. 

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, and other affiliations and contributions to their communities.  All honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements. www.iaotp.com/award-gala.

With over 6 decades of professional experience as an American Engineer and Scientist, Dr. Bement Jr. has proven himself as an accomplished professional and expert in several fields and roles, demonstrating success in all of his past positions in government, industry and academia. 

In academia he demonstrated success as a professor at four universities: The University of Washington and Oregon State University (adjunct through the Hanford Graduate Center), and full professorships at MIT and Purdue University. At MIT and Purdue University he directed three research programs: The fusion technology program at MIT and at Purdue University a 6-university research consortium in high-temperature superconductivity and the Purdue Global Policy Research Institute. He also served as a board member for the National Intelligence University in Bethesda, Maryland and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow, Russia. 

In government he served under seven presidents as: Director of the Office of Materials Science, DARPA, Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Advanced Technology, Member of the National Science Board, Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), and Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Also, for the State Department he was co-chairman of the U.S commission for Science and Technology for UNESCO, co-signer of bilateral science agreements between the U.S. and Norway and the U.S. and France, and head of science delegations to meetings of the Organization of American States and the inauguration of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia. 

In industry he achieved the rank of Senior Research Fellow at the AEC Hanford Laboratories operated by the General Electric Company, Manager of the Metallurgy Research and the Fuels and Materials Departments at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory operated by the Battelle Memorial Institute, and Vice President of Science and Technology for TRW.Dr. Bement has also held board directorships at the Keithley Instrument Company, The Lord Corporation, and Radian Research Inc. 

In public service Dr. Bement served 27 years in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, retiring as a Lt. Colonel, and was a councilman and mayor pro tem for the City of Richland Washington. He has also been an active contributor to the arts and sciences as founder and president of the Mid Columbia Arts Council, Board Director and Vice President of the Cleveland Opera Company, and Board Director for the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra. He served on planning committees for the Cleveland Science Museum and the Akron Inventors Hall of Fame, and as President of the Indiana Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Bement Jr. holds an engineer of metallurgy degree from the Colorado School of Mines, a Master’s Degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Idaho, a Doctorate in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and seven honorary doctorates from Cleveland State University, Case Western Reserve University, Colorado School of Mines, Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, University of Idaho, University of Macau, China, and the Michigan Technological University. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. 

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Bement has been active in his community and recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to science and engineering. He has received many awards, accolades and has been featured in numerous publications multiple years in a row such as Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in American Politics, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World.For 2019, Dr. Bement is being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).He has been awarded the Imperial Order of the Rising Sun with Gold and Silver Star by the Emperor of Japan and Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the President of France. In addition he received the Distinguished Federal Executive Award from the White House, The Distinguished Civilian Service Medal from the Department of Defense, the William C. Redman Award from the Department of Commerce, and was inducted into the Council of the Sagamores of the Wabash by Mitch Daniels, Governor of Indiana.

Looking back, Dr. Bement attributes his success to continuing education, a varied experience with great mentors along the way, staying committed in his endeavors, and to his two extraordinarily gifted and supportive wives; his late wife Mary and current wife Louise.Dr. Bement says he has been blessed, loves learning, and feels there is still more to achieve.During the course of his career he has traveled to all seven continents, visited the capitals of 33 countries, met and shook hands with 8 Presidents, attended an induction of new members of the British Royal Academy of Engineers officiated by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburg, got to know Sir Edmund Hillary during Hillary’s last visit to Antarctica, and inaugurated the Amundsen-Scott research station at the South Pole.When he is not working Dr. Bement enjoys spending time with his expansive family consisting of eight children, three step children twenty-four grandchildren and over 30 great grandchildren, all of who are healthy, good looking and talented and dispersed around the U.S. For the future, Dr. Bement hopes to continue a making a difference throughout the world.
