On Thursday, July 23, 2020, Mr. Asaf German received the highest honor in the field of blood cancer research: the Robert de Villiers Spiral of Life award. The Spiral of Life Award is the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's most prestigious national award. There is no greater honor in the world of Leukemia research. It is given yearly to an outstanding individual who's "Tireless effort to raise funds and influence policy has advanced the mission of LLS." In terms of educating his community and engaging them in a solution, Mr. German's efforts have indeed been tireless.
In 2019, the LLS was proud to award Asaf German, a prominent real estate lawyer operating in New York City and Long Island, with the Long Island chapter's Man of the Year award. Mr. German, who at the time was brand new to the world of LLS advocacy, launched one of the most ambitious fundraising campaigns in the history of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Mr German set a goal of raising more money than anyone else in LLS history. To that effect, he set up a team that consisted of over 70 like-minded people passionate about fighting, and beating, leukemia and lymphoma.
Together, over a 10-week period the "Dream Team," as they've come to be called, set about their fundraising efforts, managing to secure donations from more than 5,000 unique donors. In total, the team raised more than $460,000 dollars for cancer research in an incredibly short period of time, setting an LLS record in the process.
Central to his campaign was a strategy that promoted maximum public awareness. Mr. German made many public appearances over that 10 week span including:
- Speaking at the "Living to Inspire" festival
- An appearance on the Donna Drake show, "Live It Up"
- Various podcast appearances
- Numerous interviews and profiles with local publications such as "The Long Islander," and "Social Life Magazine"
About his first fundraising experience, Mr. German was quoted by TBR Newsmedia as saying, "It's been the second most rewarding experience of my life after having children." Thanks to his efforts, Mr. German took home 2019's Man of the Year award presented by the Long Island chapter of the LLS.
Regarding the nomination, Mr. German said, "Working with the LLS has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It's been incredible seeing the passion that our community has for finding a cure for this type of cancer. I'm proud, and above all else honored, to be a part of that drive to eradicate this horrible disease."
Regardless of awards and accolades, Mr. German intends to stay involved with LLS fundraising in the coming years. "In the end, it's not about the recognition. It's about the mission, finding cures, having an impact and making a difference."
