Previews at Showplace Antiques + Design Center:

August 12th through August 25th

On August 25th, Auctions at Showplace will present the last installment of its summer auction series featuring choice selections from an important private collection of silver and other luxury items of the first order. Among many highlights is a large Horace Woodward & Co. Baroque manner sterling silver repousse centerpiece. A tour de force of English silver, the centerpiece was originally commissioned by the citizens of Cork, Ireland and presented to Mayor Augustine Roche in 1894.

Collectors of American silver will find many handsome pieces by brothers John and Joel Sayre, two silversmiths active in New York City and Long Island between 1778 and 1818. Of special note are three unique tea services, a pair of sweet meat dishes, a round salver tray, a mug, goblet, footed bowl, compote, and more. Other collectible silver includes pieces made by Hyde & Nevins, J.B. Jones, Edward Lownes, Baldwin Gardiner, William Adams, J.E. Caldwell, Pear & Bacall, John Aitken, and Lincoln & Foss. A world class collection of silver vinaigrettes features many fine English examples along with choice Scottish pieces with inlaid agate and bloodstone.

Complementing the silver is a private collection from Park Avenue of Pre-Columbian gold and copper artifacts. These objects, created nearly a half millennium ago demonstrate the skill and craftsmanship of early metalworkers. Ranging from jewelry to ritual objects, the collection includes a Quimbaya Tumbaga gold animal figure, a Colima Tumbaga bird finial pin, a Tairona Tumbaga bird fitting, and a pair of Sinu copper earrings.

A robust selection of mid-century modern furniture and design includes two Italian blonde wood sideboards with unusual enameled metal mounts, a French gilt metal console table with travertine top, a monumental bronze and smoked glass etagere, a pair of Eames Herman Miller LCW chairs and one DCW chair, a John Risley anthropomorphic wrought iron chair, five Rud Thygesen and Johnny Sorensen for Botium postmodern dining chairs, a B&B Italia modern queen size bed with mesh headboard, a pair of 2B Danish end tables, an Eames Office "Soft Pad" chair, a Mitchell Gold sleeper sofa, and a Bernard Rohne for Mastercraft glass top low table.

As always, Showplace will offer wonderful fine jewelry including a pair of Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co. "Sevillana" 18K yellow gold hoop earrings, a pair of Ippolita 18K and chrysoprase earrings, an 18K owl stick pin with emeralds, and a Baroque Keshi pearl necklace with 18K clasp. Complementing the jewelry is an array of vintage fashion including an Oscar de la Renta five piece ensemble in red, a Bonnie Cashin for Sills yellow suede and leather robe, a Valentino rain overcoat, and other pieces by Escada and Etienne Aigner. Designer accessories including a Gucci black leather belt with gold-tone buckle, a Cartier wool and silk shawl, a Chanel drawstring black quilted leather backpack, and other bags by Bottega Veneta, Delvaux, Miu Miu, and Vince Camuto.
