Emergency Basic Estate Plans Available Free of Charge
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread across the United States, nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, and other medical staff are putting their own health and safety at risk to protect our communities. In recognition of their sacrifice, Infinity Law Group LLC, a family law firm based in Quincy, Massachusetts, is offering healthcare workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic an emergency basic estate plan, free of charge.
This plan would include three components: a health care proxy, last will and testament, and durable power of attorney. All documents will be drafted in accordance with Massachusetts law.
The firm’s founder, Gabriel Cheong, knew that he had to do something after reading a New York Times article about nurses preparing wills because of the dangers they are currently confronting while treating patients with the coronavirus. According to Mr. Cheong, “As a divorce lawyer, my skills are pretty useless at a time like this. I wanted to give back to all the brave nurses and medical staff out there fighting this deadly virus.”
Mr. Cheong will personally draft these basic emergency estate planning documents. Each will contain instructions for how medical staff can execute the documents at the hospital. This will allow everyone to comply with the social distancing measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Once the pandemic has ended, Mr. Cheong encourages all healthcare workers who have received an emergency basic estate plan to meet with an attorney to reevaluate their plan. By doing this, medical staff can develop a more complete estate plan that takes into consideration the special needs of their children or spouses, as well as estate tax implications.
