"His Mustache Talks" is more than a traditional children's book. It was originally written by Dan Roth in 2018, shortly after he received a devastating colon cancer diagnosis. The book was to be a farewell story to his children, ages ten and twelve at the time. The story was completed days before surgery to remove his tumor and half his colon. Surgery was a success and the long-term prognosis improved dramatically. According to Mr. Roth, "Like any other bloke going through cancer treatment, I decided chemo would be a great time to rework my farewell story into a children's book... a funny, laugh-out-loud children's book." Now mostly recovered, Dan Roth recently launched "His Mustache Talks" on Kickstarter. He needs to raise $8500 in support to bring the book to publication. Mr. Roth says, "It might be the only hilarious children's book inspired by a brutal cancer journey, in the history of children's literature. To be fair, the story itself is not about cancer. But it does show that we can keep our dreams alive during treatment, even if they sound impossible, like writing a hilarious children's book inspired by, but not about, cancer." The story is actually about a grumpy man who is cursed with hairy sneezes. It is written in rhyme and includes a weird collection of characters including a talking mustache and a kitty made out of beard (who happens to toot). It is appropriate for all ages and teaches readers how our words and actions shape the world around us. The main character must overcome his own grumpiness to find happiness.
