Clair Claiborne, Consulting Materials Scientist for Claiborne Consultants LLC, was just recently selected as Top Scientist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and dedication to the Materials Science industry.
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. With having over 4 decades of professional experience in Materials Science, Dr. Claiborne has certainly proven himself as an extraordinary professional, and expert in the field. Dr. Claiborne is a dynamic, results-driven leader who has demonstrated success not only as a Consulting Materials Scientist, but in every position he has held. His impressive repertoire of prior roles have included: he was a Farm Worker in West Germany for Widmann Familie, Chemotechnician for Sued Chemie A.G, Research Chemist for Phillips Petroleum, Senior Materials Scientist for Westinghouse Electric Company, Senior Scientist, Principal Consulting R&D Scientist & Environmental Specialist for ABB Power T&D Co. Inc, Fellow of the ASTM International and Vice Chair Natural Esters Task Force for IEEE Transformers Committee. With his consulting business Dr. Claiborne assists organizations that manufacture transformers and consults with companies in terms of the materials that go into transformers such as the liquids, metals, ceramics etc.
One of Dr. Claiborne’s biggest achievements was the invention of BIOTEMP, a biodegradable vegetable oil used to deliver high performance power transformer insulation. BIOTEMP offers significant environmental, fire safety and operational advantages over mineral oil and other alternative insulating fluids. Dr. Claiborne and Dr. T.V. Oommen (deceased) are duly noted for the invention.
Dr. Claiborne received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry from The University of Kansas and his Ph.D in Materials Science from Northwestern University. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Claiborne has received numerous awards and accolades and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. For 2019 he is being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professional Magazine), and is also being considered for IAOTP’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He was chosen as Top Scientist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) and was the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award given by Marquis Who’s Who . Dr. Claiborne has been featured in Who’s Who of the East and Who’s Who in the World. In 2002, he received the Regional Innovation Award for his invention of BIOTEMP and in 2000, he was the co-recipient of the IR Award for the invention. Dr. Claiborne is a convener for the International Electrotechnical Commission PT26975 for Natural Ester Use and Maintenance, Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the Society of Plastic Engineers. Dr. Claiborne is also an elected fellow and former chairman of the American Society for Testing and Materials and he maintains his Membership with the American Chemical Society and the International Council on Large Electric Systems.
Aside from his successful career, Dr. Claiborne is also a published author and has contributed more than 75 articles to various peer-reviewed journals. He holds 10 US Patents and 4 European patents. He authored “Working with Metals.”
Looking back, Dr. Claiborne attributes his success to his education, mentors he has had along the way and staying passionate in all his endeavors. He says he has been blessed and feels this is just the beginning. For the future, he hopes to continue to thrive as a scientist and business owner and inspire others to pursue a career in this field.
