Debbie M. Schaum, Associate Chair of Applied Aviation Sciences and Acting Program Coordinator for Spaceflight Operations for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, was selected as Top Professional of the Year in Meteorology for 2018 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP), for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the field.
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations and contributions to their communities. With over 3 decades of professional experience as a meteorologist, Debbie has certainly proven herself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field. As a dynamic, results-driven leader, Debbie has demonstrated success not only as Associate Chair of Applied Aviation Sciences which houses four degrees, Meteorology, Spaceflight Operations, Air Traffic Management and Aerospace and Occupational Safety, but also as a Professor teaching meteorology and as Acting Program Coordinator for Spaceflight Operations. Debbie has been successful in every prior role she has obtained. Debbie began her career in the United States Air Force as a meteorologist, where she spent 17 years in the military before retiring at the rank of Major. It was in the air force where Debbie received her training in meteorology and weather experience and equipped her with a lifetime of knowledge and skills.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the world’s largest and fully accredited educational institution specializing in aviation and aerospace. It is home to various undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. degree programs throughout its colleges of arts and sciences, aviation, business and engineering as well as security and intelligence. Debbie’s key responsibilities are to develop curriculum standards for students with interests in aviation, aerospace and meteorology and her expertise is in meteorology support for aviation.
Debbie graduated from Webster University with her Master’s degree in Management and received her Bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Missouri System-Columbia. The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami, stated “Choosing Debbie for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make. She is a talented, empowered woman in a male dominated industry and she is brilliant at what she does and we felt she would make an amazing asset to our organization. We are looking forward to meeting her at the gala and know we will be seeing more amazing things from her.”
Throughout her illustrious career Debbie has received many awards, accolades and has been recognized worldwide for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. For 2018 she is being considered for a feature in TIP (Top Industry Professional ) Magazine and for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). For 2017 and 2016 she was selected as Pinnacle Professional of the Year in Higher Education by Continental Who’s Who. She also volunteers at local schools and mentors foster children and the physically challenged.
Looking back, Debbie attributes her success to her training, her perseverance, mentors she has had along the way, and her passion for what she does. When not working she enjoys spending time with her family. For the future, she will continue to grow as a professional and wants to continue to inspire young girls to spark an interest in the math and sciences and to make a difference in people’s lives any way she can.
