The Igbo Community of Colorado is raising awareness of the carnage of Igbo people in Nigeria with a letter to US officials and a rally to unify supporters

DENVER, Colo. (August 1, 2021)—Igbo Community of Colorado (ICC), an integral diaspora part of the Igbo people in southeast Nigeria, is calling for the US government to take action to put an end to the genocide of the Igbo people in Nigeria. The Denver-based group has drafted a letter calling for the US government's intervention in the decades-long state-sanction carnage and is organizing a rally to raise awareness of the atrocities committed against the Igbo people.

The rally is set for Friday, August 6, from 11 am-2 pm in Denver. Those interested in marching should meet on the corner of Colfax and York. The group will march down Colfax to the Capitol Complex. ICC invites all Igbos, Nigerians, Africans, and well-wishers and sympathizers to join the rally, which ICC hopes will call attention to the senseless violence being committed against the Igbo people and bring an end to it.

In addition to the rally, ICC has also drafted a letter addressed to Vice President Kamala Harris to raise the government’s awareness of the human rights atrocities being committed and urging the government to take action. In the letter, ICC calls for the US government to assist with establishing safe havens for the Igbo people, intervene to stop the systemic genocide of the Igbo, and leverage the powers of the Magnitsky Act to sanction Nigerian president General Muhammadu Buhari, who has instigated further violence against the Igbo with threats.

The Igbo people are native to south-central and southeastern Nigeria and are largely Judeo-Christian. Since 1945, the Nigerian state has turned a blind eye toward the violence committed against the Igbo and has supported the mass genocide, rape, and abuse of the Igbo people and destruction of their homes and property. It has been called the longest series of killings against any people on the African continent.

"ICC is committed to taking a stand against the state-sanctioned murder and rape of the Igbo people in Nigeria," said ICC president Banabas Okpara. "We hope to give a voice to the Igbo people who have no voice in Nigeria and prompt action by the US government in hopes they will take action to put an end to this decades-long violence. We invite all Igbos, Nigerians, Africans, and supporters in the Denver area to come out on August 6 and unite our voices to call for an end to these atrocities."
