Dr. David Hardiman, Sr. WMHDA Director and Leader of the San Francisco All Star Big Band and Combos, was just recently selected as Top Music Director of the Year" for 2019 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and commitment to his industry.
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations and contributions to their communities. With over 4 decades of professional experience as a music educator and professional musician, Dr. Hardiman has certainly proven himself as an outstanding professional and expert in the music industry. As a motivated results driven leader, Dr. Hardiman has demonstrated success not only as Director for the San Francisco All Star Big Band & Combos, but in every position ever obtained. Dr. Hardiman’s impressive repertoire of roles have included, music educator, college professor, professional musician, trumpet & Piano player, composer, arranger, adjudicator and jazz historian. He is a Professor Emeritus of Jazz Studies for the City College of San Francisco and Bugler at Golden Gate Fields Horse Race Track. He formerly taught in the Indianapolis, Indiana Public Schools, Berkeley Unified School District in California, Contra Costa Community College and Alameda College. David Hardiman’s Combos/San Francisco All Star Big Band has performed for Palo Alto Street Fairs, San Francisco Art Festival, Duke Ellington Celebrations, Martin Luther King Museum of Modern Art, Oakland Links Inc, along with many other venues. Dr. Hardiman is an internationally renowned musician who has also played to Pori Finland, Andorra, Esplanade, Spain, Italy, North Sea Jazz Festival etc. He has produced 5 recordings and recorded with some of the most talented musicians from all different backgrounds. He also played in bands accompanying Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jackie Wilson and was a leader and arranger for the Tina Lane TV Show.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Hardiman has been active in his community, received numerous awards, accolades and has been recognized for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the music profession. For 2019 he is being considered for a feature article in TIP (Top Industry Professionals Magazine) and for the Lifetime Achievement Award by IAOTP. Also for 2019 he was selected as “Top Music Director of the Year” by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). For 2018 he was the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. For 2017 he received the Spirit Award for Music Artistry and Best Jazz Band Award. He was recognized as Top Star Award by the Bay Area Entertainment and recognized in Down Beat Magazine-3 Stars as well as many other awards.
Aside from his successful career, Dr. Hardiman is also a longtime member of the National Association of Negro Musicians, the American Federation of Musicians and the Jazz Action Movement. He has served as a board director for the Oakland Jazz Complex and as President of the Bay Area Jazz Society.
Dr. Hardiman earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Indiana University in 1959 and a Master of Arts in Music from Butler University in 1971. In 2017, he received an honorary Doctorate in Arts World Music from Martin University and is certified to teach music in community college in California and in Indiana. The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami stated that “Choosing Dr. Hardiman for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make. His passion for music has inspired professionals on a global level. His diversity and talent in so many facets of music is amazing, he is brilliant at what he does. Dr. Hardiman’s lists of accomplishments are beyond impressive, and he was exactly what we were looking for. We know we will be seeing more outstanding things from this man and hope to spend time with him at the gala and other future IAOTP events.”
Looking back, Dr. Hardiman attributes his success to his perseverance, mentors he has had along the way and staying passionate in all his endeavours. He says he has been blessed he loves doing what he is doing, and feels this is just the beginning. When he is not working, Dr. Hardiman enjoys travelling and spending time with his family. For the future he would like to continue to improve the world and to make it a better place through music and to make people happy.
