Dr. Gordon J. Alexander, John Spooner Chair in Investment Management and Professor of Finance for the University of Minnesota was recently selected as Top Professor of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.
Inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. With more than 45 years of experience as a Professor, Dr. Alexander has certainly proven himself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field of Finance. He has demonstrated success not only as a Professor but in all of his prior positions. Dr. Alexander began his career serving as an Assistant Professor of Finance with the University of Minnesota in 1975. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1978 then Professor in 1982. Dr. Alexander has held appointments as a Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California-Los Angeles and the University of Auckland. Since 2002, Dr. Alexander has shared his skills at the University of Minnesota as the John Spooner Chair in Investment Management. Additionally, he has provided his know-how and expertise as an Academy Economic Fellow for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and as a Professor of Finance for the Minnesota Banking Industry.
Dr. Alexander’s areas of expertise include but are not limited to portfolio theory and management and his current research focuses on short selling, risk management, market microstructure and mutual funds. As a Professor, he has taught Undergraduate, Masters, Doctoral and Executive level courses.
Before embarking on his professional career path, Dr. Alexander earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Buffalo in 1969, he later enrolled for his Master of Business at the University of Michigan and received his degree in 1970. Finally, Dr. Alexander returned to the University of Michigan and obtained his Master of Arts in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Finance in 1975.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Alexander has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the field of Finance. He has received many awards, accolades and has been featured in numerous publications and been an active member of his community. This year Dr. Alexander will be considered for a feature article in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). In 2008-2009 he was the President of the Midwest Finance Association; from 1995-1997 he was the Director and from 2014-2016 he served as the Vice President of Financial Education for the Financial Management Association. In 2015 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Midwest Finance Association. Dr. Alexander was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Center for Advanced Study of Management and Economics at the University of Evora in Portugal since 2007. He was also presented with a Fullbright Grant and an Ayres Fellowship from the American Bankers Association.
Aside from his successful career, Dr. Alexander has co-authored three books and his research has been published in over 50 professional articles including Academic Journals, Educational Journals and Practitioner Journals for Finance. He serves on the Editorial Boards of the European Journal of Finance, the Quarterly Journal of Finance, the Journal of Economics and Business and the Financial Review. He previously served on the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Financial Quantitative Analysis.
Looking back, Dr. Alexander attributes his success to his experience, education, mentors he has had the honor of working alongside and staying passionate in all his endeavors. When he is not working, Dr. Alexander enjoys spending time with his family and traveling. For the future, he hopes to encourage students and professionals to pursue careers in Finance and to have a positive impact on as many people’s lives as he can.
