Dr. Leonard Barry Smith, DDS, MSc, FRCD( C), FAAPD(life), Diplomate ABPD(life), Pediatric Dentist and former owner of his private practice, Dental Care for Children, located in Calgary, Alberta Canada, was recently chosen to be featured in the Top 50 Fearless Leaders Publication by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).
While being selected to be published in IAOTP’s Top 50 Fearless Leaders Publication, is an honor in itself, only 50 of the world’s most brilliant, courageous, inspirational professionals are selected for this distinction.

Dr. Smith has exemplary brilliance in his field and has dedicated more than fifty years of his career to Pediatric Dentistry. He was honored in 2019 as Top Pediatric Dentist of the Year and he will receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from 2020. Along with these merits, Dr. Smith will be awarded as the Top Pediatric Dentist of the Decade while in attendance of IAOTP’s 2022 Annual Awards Gala being held at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas this December.
With such a phenomenal impact over the course of his professional career as a Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Smith has proven his brilliance and exceptional skills. His impressive background of prior work experience includes: President of the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, Chief of the Dental Department at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and a consultant to their hemophilia and cleft palate teams. Dr. Smith is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and an associate member of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute for Child and Maternal Health. He served as Chairman of the Non-Hospital Dental Facility Accreditation Committee of the Alberta Dental Association and College.
Dr. Smith received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Alberta in 1968 and earned a Master’s of Science Degree and Pedodontic Dentistry Certification from Ohio State University in 1972. In 1970, he completed a hospital residency at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, Life Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a Life Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Smith is the founder of two non-profit organizations, The Society for A Healthy Mouth Healthy Child (Alberta) and the Foundation for a Healthy Mouth Healthy Child in the United States. As Dr. Smith observed a significant increase in the occurrence of early childhood caries (ECC) locally, he began further research and discovered this problem was all throughout North America. ECC, which can begin as early as 9 months of age, is an infectious disease and if it is not treated or treatment is delayed, can cause serious health issues that can impact the child for the rest of their lives. Dr. Smith recognized a need to provide the public with compelling evidence that ECC was a disease that was about more than just baby teeth. As a result, Dr. Smith held awareness campaigns to teach why it is so critical to have preventive dental care from a baby’s first feeding in order to stop the occurrence of ECC.
Dr. Smith is widely known as the first formally trained Pediatric Dentist in Calgary and his Practice was as a Pediatric Dentistry Clinic established in Calgary. Dental Care Children provides Calgary’s young patients with a warm, friendly, and family-oriented dental experience. Dr. Smith’s passion, care and educating his patients on oral healthcare has set him apart from other dentists. He has provided for generations of patients and cared for healthy children, children with special needs, and patients ranging from newborns and up.
Being recognized worldwide throughout his career, Dr. Smith has received numerous awards and accolades. Last year Dr. Smith was featured on the famous Reuters Building in Times Square, NYC for his selection as Top Pediatric Dentist of the Decade. For 2019 he graced the front cover on TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and was honored as Top Pediatric Dentist of the Year. For 2017 he was selected as Pinnacle Professional of the Year by Continental Who’s Who and recognized by the International Association for HealthCare Professionals and Leading Physicians of the World. For 2014 he received a special achievement award from the American Academy of Pediatrics for his distinguished service and dedication to the mission and goals of the Academy. For 2013 selected as Outstanding Professional of the Year by Worldwide Who’s Who. He has been interviewed by CUTV News and is being considered for an exclusive interview to be featured on TIP Radio.
Looking back, Dr. Smith attributes his success to his wife and children, his education, mentors he has had the honor of working alongside and his passion for research. When not working, he enjoys traveling and spending time with his family. For the future, he hopes to continue educating people through an age specific oral health curriculum. He hopes that one day it will become the standard curriculum globally and written in every major language and made available using broadband technology, to reach those in remote locations. He feels that unless we teach the children of today and the parents of tomorrow, why and how their oral health impacts their overall health and development, Early Childhood Caries will never be controlled or eliminated.
