Dr. Raymond Hakim selected as Top Professor of the Year in Nephrology by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

Raymond M. Hakim, M.D., Ph.D, Professor of Nephrology for Vanderbilt University was just recently selected as Top Professor of the Year in Nephrology by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP), for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the industry.

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. With 4 decades of professional experience in Medicine, Dr. Hakim has certainly proven himself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field.  As a results-driven leader he has demonstrated success not only as a Physician, but also as a trusted and seasoned Clinical Professor of Medicine in Nephrology. His impressive repertoire of prior roles have included Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Renal Care Group, Chief Medical Officer of Fresenius Medical Care, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine,  Director of Clinical Services in Nephrology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a Research Scientist at the Institute of Research of Hydro-Quebec. Dr. Hakim is board certified in Nephrology in the United States, a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and certified as a specialist in internal medicine in Quebec.  Dr. Hakim is also licensed to practice medicine in Tennessee, and Quebec.

Dr. Hakim earned his Master of Science in Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965, followed by a Ph.D. in Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967.  He subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in 1976.  He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Royal Victoria Hospital in 1979.  He served as a research and clinical fellow in medicine and nephrology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami stated that “Choosing Dr. Hakim for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make.  He is brilliant, his list of accomplishments and accolades are beyond impressive, he is active in numerous organizations and affiliations, he was exactly what we were looking for.  We know we will be seeing more outstanding things from this man and hope to spend time with him at the gala.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Hakim has been active in his community and recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the field of Nephrology. He has received many awards, accolades and has been featured in numerous publications multiple years in a row such as Marquis Who’s Who, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who in the World.    For 2019, Dr. Hakim is being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).  For 2018 he was selected as Top Professor of the Year in Nephrology by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) and recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.  For 2017 he was honored with the Belding H. Scribner Award from the American Society of Nephrology.  In 2011, he was presented with the American Association of Kidney Patients Medal of Excellence Award.  In 2009 he was honored with the Joel D. Kopple Award from the National Kidney Foundation.  In 2007 and 1994 Dr. Hakim was recognized as one of America’s Top Physicians and Elected to Best Doctors in America numerous years in a row.  In 1982 he received the Award for Excellence in Teaching from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Aside from his successful career, Dr. Hakim is also a sought after lecturer, speaker, Editor and published author.  He has authored and co-authored more than 200 articles in professional journals and chapters in books.  He has served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Seminars of Dialysis, and Kidney International. Co-editor of both “Clinical Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplatnations” and guest co-editor of “25 Years of the ESRD Program, Part One and Two “Seminars in Nephrology” 1997 and 1994.  Dr. Hakim has held numerous leadership roles with professional organizations, including past Chairman of the Renal Leadership Council, elected Chairman of the Kidney Care Partners, sat on the public policy board of the American Society of Nephrology, former board member of the American Association of Kidney Patients, former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of Prometic, and he is a member of the Renal Physicians Association, and the International Society of Nephrology.

Looking back, Dr. Hakim attributes his success to his experience, education, mentors he has had along the way and staying passionate in all his endeavors.  Dr. Hakim says he has been blessed, he loves doing what he is doing, and feels this is just the beginning.  When he is not working he enjoys spending time with his family and traveling. For the future Dr. Hakim hopes to continue to make a difference in people’s lives anyway that he can.
