David Van der Heyden aka Lavito joined The Noam Chomsky Music Project in releasing a new album today. In an interview he excitedly discusses how using Chomksy’s lectures impacted his musical process.
The Noam Chomsky Music Project, run by the label Synesthesia Media, is a global and expansive effort to disseminate American linguist Noam Chomsky’s lectures and amplify his voice in an innovative way, delivering his words through one of the most universally powerful artforms: Music. The goal is to preserve and celebrate Chomsky’s outlook on the world.
Spanning genres from classical to hip-hop to electronic, dozens of musicians from around the world have joined the effort. Many of the artists who participate in the project draw from an audio archive of Chomsky’s lectures which Synesthesia Media spent over a year building.
Lavito was shocked by how many memorable and impactful quotes there were from Chomsky: “I had some difficulties [deciding] which ones I was going to use. When I decided which ones to use, I put them in the intro with a little bit of filter effect to make it sound like older radio because I love that lo-fi feeling.”
Although he had never heard of Chomsky attributed to his being based in Belgium, he said he felt a connection to Chomsky’s lectures on democracy, wealth and privilege. These anecdotes from Chomsky influenced his music.
“In fact, one of my tracks is called “The Wealthy and Privileged” and reflects the darker side of the world,” Lavito said.
