With over 45 years of professional experience in domestic and foreign Intellectual Property Law, Mr. Buff has certainly proven himself as an accomplished professional and expert in the legal field. As a dynamic, results-driven leader, he has demonstrated success not only as an Attorney but in every position he has ever held. Mr. Buff has extensive knowledge of the formation and administration of patent estates, including patent and trademark prosecution, patent litigation, licensing and business agreements for the development and exploitation of proprietary properties.
His impressive repertoire of prior roles included working for Allied Chemical- now Honeywell, for over 30 years, and worked as an attorney for the law firm Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti LLP. Since 1998, Mr. Buff has served as Chair and Managing Partner of Ernest D. Buff & Associates.
At Ernest D. Buff & Associates, their focus and practice areas include Intellectual Property, Patent Practice, Trademarks, Copyright, Filing and Enforcing Patents, Patent Litigation Defense, Trademark Infringement Defense and Enforcement Litigation, Intellectual Property Infringement Defense and Copyright Infringement Defense.
Mr. Buff concentrates his technical practice in the chemical, mechanical, electrical and metallurgical industries, encompassing amorphous and microcrystalline metals, electromagnetic components, Internet and E-Commerce software systems and business methods.
Before embarking on his professional career path, Mr. Buff attended Syracuse University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1966. He furthered his education at the Boston University School of Law, earning his Juris Doctorate in 1969. Throughout his legal career, Mr. Buff has held licenses in the states of New Jersey, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. He was also admitted by the Patent Bar, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Court of Claims and the United States Supreme Court.

Throughout his remarkable career, Mr. Buff has received many awards, accolades and has been featured in publications for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the legal industry. This year he will be considered for a feature article in TIP (Top Industry Professional) Magazine and was chosen as Attorney of the Year by the International Association of Top Professional (IAOTP). For 2021 he is being considered for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to these awards, Mr. Buff was recognized for success with the Chicago Tribune Silver Medal Award, Attorney of the Month Award from National Firm and the William Berry Award. He has also been listed with Marquis Who’s Who as a dedicated Lawyer.
Aside from his remarkable practice, Mr. Buff has maintained memberships with the American Bar Association, the Morris County Bar Association, the DC Bar Association, and the Patent Bar Association. He is also a member of the President’s Advisory Council for Small Business since 2003.
Looking back, Mr. Buff attributes his success to his love and interest in his work as well as the support and cooperation of his family. When not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, 2 children and his grandchildren. For the future, he hopes to continue his excellence at the law firm and to reconnect with his passion for music by writing a symphony.
