While drones are being used more frequently in television and film as additional cameras, some content creators are using drones to take storytelling to the next level.
The aerial perspective a drone can offer allows filmmakers to create videos unlike anything seen before. Such is the case in the short film “Cardboard Cadet” by drone pilot and filmmaker Chris Castor. In the film, Castor combines drone footage with additional graphics and videos to give the illusion that a cardboard airplane — piloted by his son — is flying through the air.
Unique camera angles and the freedom of motion also make drones an appealing camera option for filmmakers who want to tell a story. Drone company Aerobo used a single drone shot to capture a 10-minute short film titled “At The End Of The Cul-De-Sac.” The DJI Inspire 1 drone with a Zenmuse X5 camera was the only camera used for the entire continuous shot.
Not all storytelling with drones is as extensive as the film by Aerobo. Some filmmakers use drone footage to compliment other camera work, sometimes including a voiceover to help move the narrative. In some cases, first-person view (FPV) racing drones have been used to tell a story in a cinematic fashion.

World travelers have found drones as a particularly useful tool to help tell the stories of their travels. These often take the form of a VLOG-style video, with drone footage used to showcase the areas in which they’re traveling. Drones filming people for instances such as weddings, music videos or action sports are yet another way of how quadcopters are helping storytellers enhance their videos.
