ATLANTA (May 10, 2021) - The International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), a division of the Global Initiative for Inclusive ICTs (G3ict) has announced the launch of a Built Environment course for professionals to understand the principles of Universal Design which enables all users, including persons with disabilities to safely enter, use and exit the built and landscaped environment.

IAAP is thrilled to be hosting the Design of Public Spaces (DoPS) online course through our edX platform. The DoPS course provides a comprehensive review of accessibility standards for the design of public spaces. Thanks to the great previous work of the Global Alliance on Accessible Technologies and the Environments (GAATES) and the IAAP team participants, on completion of the course, users will have an understanding of the scope, application criteria, and technical requirements of the accessibility standard for the design of public spaces”. Christopher Lee, Ph. D., IAAP Managing Director

The online Design of Public Spaces course, slated to be launch in May 2021, was created as an initiative of the Global Alliance on Accessible Technologies and Environments (GAATES). Since 2007 GAATES has been the leading international organization dedicated to promoting accessibility and universal design for the built environment and public spaces as per the dispositions of the United Nations Convention on the rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

The AODA Accessibility Standard for the Design of Public Spaces Course is built with a variety of unit topics covering paths of travel, trails, beach access routes and more, including challenge questions and is hosted by the OPENedX platform.  Each unit finishes with a 10-question quiz which participants must pass to earn their Certification of Completion. This is a great resource for individuals to use to help them study to take their Certified Professional in Accessible Built Environments IAAP Certification exam.
