Ian Williams selected as Top Writer of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

Ian Williams, Author, Writer, Lecturer, and Broadcaster has been named Top Writer of the Year for 2018 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the industry.

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. With over 3 decades of professional experience as an author & writer, Mr. Williams has certainly proven himself as an accomplished professional, expert & an inspiration to all in the writing community with his eclectic reach.  Unique, extraordinary, brilliant and pure genius, are just some words that come to mind when describing Mr. Williams, but he disarmingly calls himself a “Born again dilettante.”

With his variegated career path, Mr. Williams has demonstrated success not only as an author, writer, speaker, and broadcaster, but in every position he has ever held. In 1985 he  had won the Liverpool Press Club Award for “By-Line Mania,” and has amply justified it since. He has written for a wide variety of publications – ranging from the Baptist Times to Penthouse, and Hustler, but has also been contributor to the Daily Telegraph, the Financial Times, the European, The Observer and was a columnist for the New Statesman and for George Orwell’s old newspaper, Tribune.

His impressive repertoire of prior roles includes working in various capacities for many global TV and radio outlets, ABC, CBC, CNN, BBC, ITN, CNBC, Fox, Al-Jazeera, Russia Today and he has appeared on Good Morning America, The O’Reilly Factor, Hardball, Neil Cavuto, BBC’s Newsnight and many others.  He has written for a wide variety of publications – ranging from the Baptist Times to Penthouse, and Hustler but has also been contributor to the Daily Telegraph, the Financial Times, the European, The Observer and was a columnist for the New Statesman and for George Orwell’s old newspaper, Tribune.

Mr. Williams is also an anchor for The Catskill Review of Books, a syndicated radio program for which he interviews an author weekly.  He has written essays and reviews for journals ranging from the Common Review( published by the Great Books Foundation) to the London Review of Books, World Policy, the Nation and the New Statesman.  Mr. Williams frequently writes for academic journals on International affairs and the United Nations, World Today, and World Policy Journal. 

He was also a speechwriter for UK Labour leader Neil Kinnock and has taught at Bard College, New York University, Boricua College, lectured at Yale, and the UN University in Tokyo. as well as being a UN United consultant, rail worker and labor union official.  Mr. Williams has certainly wore many hats on his way to becoming a household name.

Aside from his writing, radio and TV career, Mr. Williams is also a sought-after lecturer, speaker, researcher and published author. He has authored “UNTold: The Real Story of the United Nations in Peace & War” (2017), “Political and Cultural Perceptions of George Orwell British and American Views” (2017), “Cablestitch” (2015), “The United Nations for Beginners,” (2015) , “Tequila: A Global History” (2015), “Rum: A Social and Sociable History of the Real Spirit of 1776” (2005), “The Alms Trade,” ( 989 &2005), and  “Deserter” (2004).  Mr. Williams has also been a contributor to many chapters in other collections, well as in scholarly journals.

Mr. Williams was born in Liverpool on September 21, 1949 and graduated Liverpool University in 1973 despite being suspended over student anti-Apartheid protests as a result of which he visited China during the Cultural Revolution and had a drinking competition with Premier Chou En Lai.   He began his professional writing career after spending six months in India on a Nuffield fellowship to study labor unions in the subcontinent. 

While there he met Indira Gandhi and many other politicians and veterans of independence struggles. The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami stated that “Choosing Mr. Williams for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make.  He is a brilliant, talented and a leader in the Writing, News and Media Community. He was exactly what we were looking for and we know we will be seeing more outstanding things from this man.  We also hope to spend time with him at our gala this year at the Plaza Hotel in NYC.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Williams has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and has received numerous awards and accolades and has been featured in numerous publications. For 2019 he is being considered for a feature in T.I.P (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Top Professionals.  For 2018, he was named Top Writer of the Year by IAOTP and was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who.  He has been named in close to 20 editions of Who's Who for his work, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who’s Who in the Media and Communication, and Who’s Who in the World.

In 2012 he was the Recipient of the Founders Award presented by the United Nations Correspondents Association, recipient of a NY Film Award in 1995. Mr. Williams is a member of  the Royal Institute of International Affairs; London Press Club; Overseas Press Club, NY Foreign Press Association; New York Financial Writers’ Association; and the United Nations Correspondents Association.

Looking back, Mr. Williams attributes his success to his perseverance, mentors he has had along the way, and remaining passionate in all of his works. Mr. Williams says, “job satisfaction is very important,” he loves what he is doing  and feels this is just the beginning.  When not working he enjoys attending the theater reading and traveling, and bringing up his two sons, aged 10 and 15. For the future, he will continue to thrive as a writer and hopes to continue to inspire and make a difference in people’s lives anyway that he can.
