Maria Luisa Crawford, Emeritus Professor of Geology for Bryn Mawr College was just recently selected as Top Lifetime Educator by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP), for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the field.
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations and contributions to their communities. With almost 4 decades of professional experience as a Professor of Geology, Dr. Crawford has certainly proven herself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field. As a dynamic, results-driven leader, she has demonstrated success not only as a Professor but also as an empowered woman who was not intimidated to work in a male-dominated field.With her research on solving the history of mountain belts, Dr. Crawford has conducted research on mountain ranges from southeast Pennsylvania, “where the mountains have been eroded down to the deep roots that once resided about 30 kilometers under the surface”, to Alaska, “where the mountain chain between Prince Rupert, British Columbia and Juneau, Alaska was constructed during the last 100 million years.”Dr. Crawford and her husband, William A. Crawford (also noted geologist) are both Bryn Mawr professors’ emeriti and they have established the Crawford Field Camp Scholarship, awarded through the Association of Women Geoscientists and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers. The scholarship helps offset field camp expenses for women who are pursuing careers in geosciences. Having retired in 2006, Dr. Crawford still serves as mineral curator for Bryn Mawr. Dr. Crawford also works with school groups and assists undergraduates when needed.
Dr. Crawford’s areas of expertise included focusing on metamorphism, “the changes in rocks as they are heated and buried during the development of the mountain and then return to the surface.”Dr. Crawford’s impressive repertoire of prior studies has included having studied some of the first moon rocks that were brought to earth and that are still citied in lunar studies. She has also been part of the ongoing effort to create GEON, a massive geoinformatics system that uses supercomputing to store and coordinate data across the earth sciences.
Dr. Crawford did her doctoral work at the University of California. The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami, stated “Choosing Dr. Crawford for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make.She is talented, humble, gracious, and brilliant at what she does.We felt she would make an amazing asset to our organization and we are looking forward to meeting her at the gala.”
Throughout her illustrious career Dr. Crawford has received numerous awards, accolades and has been recognized worldwide for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. For 2019 she is being considered for a feature in TIP (Top Industry Professional ) Magazine and for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).For 2018 she was selected as Top Lifetime Educator by IAOTP and earned the Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement Award.Dr. Crawford has also been featured in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who of American Women.In 1993 she received a MacArthur Fellowship, and in 1960 was awarded the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship while at Bryn Mawr College.She has traveled and studied all over the world like in Oslo Norway on a Fulbright Scholarship, and has led a group of Bryn Mawr alumnae to much of the Americas, to Europe and parts of Africa.
Aside from her successful career, Dr. Crawford is also a sought after lecturer and speaker.She often gives lectures about geological features and geological history when traveling.
Looking back, Dr. Crawford attributes her success to her passion for geology, her perseverance, and mentors she has had along the way.For the future, she will continue to inspire to everyone she meets how wonderful and complex Earth is and the many ways it influences our lives and how we influence it.
