Homeowners are making smart home improvements that will increase resale value long term

Home trends can be exhausting to keep up with. One minute you think a particular design is in, the next it is being replaced by something newer and more popular.

The cabinets in your home are also not immune to these shifts in style, specifically white cabinets, which are one of the latest designs to meet their demise.

As recent as 5 years ago, white cabinets were an extremely popular choice in homes across the country. However, the a new movement, and one that everyone is quickly incorporating into their own homes, is natural oak cabinets.

“We’ve been educating homeowners for quite some time now that we’ll soon see a shift in white cabinetry, moving back into the wood elements.” says Morgan Molitor, owner of construction2style, a lifestyle brand that specializes in full service interior remodeling, “People are often hesitant to make big changes, because they always have resale value in the back of their head… even if they have no plans to sell. They’re nervous that if they’re off about the design they put into their home for the price, the value of their home will go down and/or they’ll lose a lot of money.” continues Molitor, “But natural oak is as sure of a safe bet as you can place in today’s housing market, and you’re easily going to get that money back on the remodel and then some due to the increase of your resale value.”

So, why has oak reclaimed the title for most stylish cabinets? Well, first off, it holds a high utilitarian value, as oak is an extremely hard and durable wood that can withstand the wear and tear of a busy kitchen.

“Functionality is at the forefront of many home designs today, so it makes sense why oak has become so popular once more,” says Molitor of the shift.

Next, oak is very flexible, in that you can customize it to fit your own tastes. You can sand down and stain, glaze or even paint over it, but it’s the natural rustic appearance of the wood that pairs well with just about any color of kitchen appliance or decor makes it truly one of a kind.

Whether you’re looking to sell your property, or just want to maintain and improve your home’s resale value for when the day does to place it on the market, the move to natural oak cabinetry is a must.
