Dr. Daniel Mills with the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute answers commonly asked questions related to breast augmentation, including inquiries about recovery time and potential results.

Laguna Beach, CA - Cosmetic breast surgeries have become increasingly popular at his practice over the years, says Daniel C. Mills, MD, FACS of the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute. More specifically, breast augmentation continues to be highly favored among his patients, which reflects an overall national trend that has seen breast enlargement procedures maintain their status as one of the most popular surgical cosmetic enhancement options for many years. Dr. Mills, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Orange County who has performed thousands of breast surgeries throughout his career, notes that it is very important for potential breast augmentation patients to be well-informed about the procedure in order to make a knowledgeable decision as they consider undergoing treatment. To help women who are curious about breast enhancement, Dr. Mills answers frequently asked questions regarding breast augmentation surgery.

Many potential patients ask Dr. Mills about overall candidacy for the procedure. Some women will even ask if they are “too old” to undergo breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Mills reminds individuals that the overall health of a patient is a more important factor than age. He says that as long as an individual has realistic expectations and is medically cleared for surgery, they may be a good candidate for treatment. Dr. Mills notes that he has successfully performed breast augmentation procedures for women in their sixties and beyond with beautiful, natural-looking results.

Dr. Mills says that he is also frequently asked about potential complications that are associated with breast augmentation surgery. In terms of the breast implants themselves, he states that the implants he offers have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and are considered safe for these types of procedures. He says that breast implants usually last up to ten years; therefore, women may need to exchange or remove their implants in the future. In some cases, a patient may need to remove or exchange their implants because of a rupture or leak. Dr. Mills suggests patients do regular self-exams as well as routine breast exams with a medical professional to detect any potential complications ahead of time. Additionally, Dr. Mills notes that he also offers breast implant ultrasound imaging at his practice. For women who had their breast augmentation performed by Dr. Mills, an ultrasound imaging test is provided for free. “This advanced method of viewing implants has helped many of my patients who don’t have a primary care physician or enough benefits to cover the cost of expensive imaging tests,” Dr. Mills says.

Some women are also concerned about a particular type of cancer called Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). Dr. Mills reminds individuals that this is an uncommon complication related to certain kinds of textured breast implants, which he has not used in breast augmentation procedures for more than five years. In addition, the FDA has not recommended that patients who currently have textured breast implants undergo implant removal surgery unless they are experiencing symptoms. If patients have any questions or concerns about their current implants, Dr. Mills says that they should not hesitate to reach out to their plastic surgeon.

In terms of recovery time after breast augmentation, Dr. Mills says that the process will be somewhat different for each patient depending on the complexity of their procedure and unique circumstances. He explains how he gives each of his patients detailed post-operative instructions based on what is best for the individual. He says that patients usually return to office-based work four to five days after surgery; however, he advises patients not to do any heavy lifting or engage in strenuous activities for at least three weeks to ensure that the incisions heal properly. Swelling and bruising may occur, but these side effects typically subside in the following days or weeks. Since breast augmentation is a surgical procedure, Dr. Mills says that scarring is unavoidable; however, he explains that incisions can often be placed in less noticeable areas, which can result in less visible scarring, and scars often fade to some extent over time. Dr. Mills is internationally known for going through the armpit and under the muscle, concealing the scar and making it hard to find.

Dr. Mills reminds patients that the most important part of the breast augmentation process is finding a highly-qualified plastic surgeon that listens to their concerns and aesthetic goals. He encourages individuals to meet their potential plastic surgeon either in-person or virtually to openly communicate and ask questions, giving themselves a chance to evaluate their rapport and level of trust in the surgeon’s skills and abilities. Overall, Dr. Mills says that patients should feel comfortable and confident being under their plastic surgeon’s care throughout treatment to ensure the highest levels of satisfaction.
