Paula Crown, Emanare, Miami New World Symphony WALLCAST, 2021
Miami, FL, 2021––During Miami Art Week, the New World Symphony will present EMANARE, an interactive installation by Chicago-based artist Paula Crown. Known for her multimedia practice incorporating cutting edge technologies and social activism, this presentation, traveling from New York’s Rockefeller Center, will be EMANARE’s largest iteration yet. On view over two evenings, November 30 and December 1, 2021 from 7-11pm This participant-generated artwork will be projected onto the building’s famed WALLCAST®, and invites an audience from across the globe to activate the work by entering messages of positive intention and affirmation via QR-code, or through the artist’s website by answering the question, “What positive message do you want to emanate into the world today?”
Inspired by Buddhist prayer wheels, EMANARE, Latin for emanate, scrolls these positive messages in a ruminative, meditative fashion across WALLCAST®, pulsating with calming colors, and a soundscape developed for the artwork in collaboration with New World Symphony Fellows: Douglas Aliano, Amelia del Cano, Ben Fryxell, Zoë Merrill, Zachary Ragent, and Marcelina Suchocka. These messages layer, conjoin and merge into one another, transforming the work into a collection of each participant’s unique contribution, inspiring us to be present, consider others, and continue to spread positivity.

About the Artist
Paula Crown (b. Marblehead, Mass) is a multimedia artist incorporating cutting-edge technology, social activism, and a commitment to sustainability in her studio practice. Crown holds an M.F.A. in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Her solo exhibitions include the Aspen Institute (2013), Dallas Contemporary (2014), Marlborough Gallery, New York (2015), The Goss-Michael Foundation, Dallas (2016), 10 Hanover, London (2017), Studio Cannaregio, Venice (2018) concurrent with the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, and Fort Gansevoort, New York (2018). Recent public art installations include; JOKESTER in Aspen, CO (2018), Milwaukee, WI (2020); and the Miami Design District, Miami, FL (2018); #solotogether (Messages for the City), Times Square Arts, New York, NY, which traveled to the Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC (2020); and What Are You For?, For Freedoms Awakening Billboard, Boston, MA (2020)She has participated in several group exhibitions internationally, notably For Freedoms at Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, NY (2016); For Freedoms: Where Do We Go From Here? at The International Center for Photography, New York, NY (2019); and This is America | USA Today at Kunsthal KAdE, Amersfoort, NL (2020). Crown’s artworks are in numerous public and private collections including Agnes Gund Collection, NY, Tishman Speyer Collection, NY, and The Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas, TX.
In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Crown to the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. She is a member of the board of trustees of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where she chairs the Education Committee. She also serves on the Aspen Institute Committee of the Arts. Crown lives and works in Aspen, Colorado and Chicago, Illinois.
About New World Symphony
The New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy, prepares graduates of music programs for leadership roles in professional orchestras and ensembles. In the 34 years since its co-founding by Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas and Lin and Ted Arison, NWS has helped launch the careers of more than 1,150 alumni worldwide. A laboratory for the way music is taught, presented and experienced, the New World Symphony consists of young musicians who are granted fellowships lasting up to three years. The fellowship program offers in-depth exposure to traditional and modern repertoire, professional development training and personalized experiences working with leading guest conductors, soloists and visiting faculty. Relationships with these artists are extended through NWS’s extensive distance learning via the internet. NWS Fellows take advantage of the innovative performance facilities and state-of-the art practice and ensemble rooms of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center, the campus of the New World Symphony.
New World Symphony WALLCAST® concerts allow you to experience live classical music performances throughout the season at SoundScape Park through a striking use of visual and audio technology on the soaring, 7,000-square-foot projection wall of the New World Center.
