After buying the property in 1998 and discovering the love and fascination of her pastoral lifestyle by her family and friends, Susan was inspired to open up the property to newcomers so that they too could experience tranquil country life. When Susan first opened the B&B in 2003, she transitioned from her “town and country” lifestyle to full-time life on the ranch. The private 35 acres of idyllic Texas paradise include a large swimming pool, outdoor spa, picturesque wildflower meadows, and plenty of farm animals including chickens, donkeys, sheep, goats, and miniature horses. The property sets itself apart from the many other rentals in the area by boasting exquisite design, antique decor, rich history, luxurious amenities, and serene privacy away from the bustling of city life.
The luxury accommodations were built in the 19th and early 20th centuries and each of the three properties have a unique and fascinating history. Both the Historical Greek Revival Farmhouse and the Texas Saltbox Cottage were built by German immigrants in the mid-1800’s. Most notably, the Private Schoolhouse building is one of over five thousand Rosenwald Schools which were built primarily for the education of African-American children in the South in the early 1900’s. Each building was originally located in Old Washington, Texas and was imported to Wakefield Farms before being restored and renovated to become the modern and comfortable cottages they are today.
Of all of Susan Borck’s creative projects and accomplishments, perhaps the most impressive is how successfully she has adapted her business during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Since Texas Governor Greg Abbott placed limitations on businesses’ opening capacity, Susan has altered her reservation process. When making a reservation, guests are now able to select which of the three properties they would like to visit, and the other two properties will be blocked off from other guests during the selected time period. By limiting capacity to the ranch to only one party at a time, Susan has both ensured the safety of her guests and has fully booked her accommodations for months to come.
