Sahar Whelan, RPh, BSc. Phm MSc. Phm, Director of Pharmacy/Business Development for Concord Specialty Pharmacy, has been named “Top Professional of the Year in Pharmacy for 2016” by the International Association of Top Professionals. While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations and contributions to their communities. All honorees will be invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.
With over 25 years of experience in pharmacy and over 15 years as Director of Pharmacy, the latest at her own Concord Specialty Pharmacy, Ms. Whelan has certainly proved herself in the industry. Her typical day is overseeing all operations of the business. She must ensure the physicians trust her, equipment and medications are dispensed perfectly and efficiently and she handles all the business development while designating administrative work to a competent and loyal staff.
Ms. Whelan received her master's degree in pharmacy from the University of Toronto in 1990, and is a member of The Canadian Pharmacist Association. She remains active in her community contributing to the Straight Connection Soup Kitchen, is an Easter Child Sponsor, and a pharmacist representative on CancerCare Ontario as well as Palliative Group Volunteer Committees. When not working Ms. Whelan loves spending time with her family.
Looking back, Ms. Whelan attributes her success to her internal drive and ambition, as well as her passion for helping improve the quality of patients’ lives. She became involved in her profession because after college, she bought a small retail pharmacy, but felt that she lacked intellectual stimulation in the day-to-day operations of the business. She looked for ways that she could add academics to the business and responded to an advertisement about infusion. She educated herself and decided to use technology and pharmacy to change lives by making the process stress free.She has progressed naturally in her career since that point. Looking into the future Sahar aspires to develop a new type of contract with government agencies to make accessibility to quality care the same for all Canadians.
Concord Specialty Pharmacy is a specialty pharmacy that provides infusion equipment, supplies and medications. The business provides IV and sterile compounding as well as being a vital resource of products for home care clients . In addition, non-sterile compounding for customized medications is another one of their specialties along with excellence in customer service.
