San Antonio Plastic Surgeon Reveals Key Factors to Consider Before Undergoing Breast Augmentation

09/17/2020 06:00 - United States, Texas, San Antonio - (PR Distribution™)

Dr. John Ayala, a board-certified plastic surgeon from San Antonio, sheds light on what patients can anticipate from the breast augmentation procedure, including consultation details, recovery information, and when to expect the final results.

San Antonio, TX — For decades, using implants to enhance the size, shape, and contour of the breasts has been considered a highly effective and long-lasting form of breast enhancement. Statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reveal breast augmentation was the most popular procedure performed last year among patients who are between 18 and 50 years of age. Given the importance of thorough patient education before any surgical procedure, aesthetic plastic surgeon John Ayala, MD, FACS has offered insight into what women who desire breast implants can expect from the breast augmentation procedure.

According to Dr. Ayala, a common misconception patients have about breast implants is their perceived ability to reduce breast sag. He clarifies that while implants can certainly add shape, volume, and fullness to the bust, they are not an ideal solution to eliminate breast ptosis (drooping). Breast implants simply cannot address the root cause of breast sag, which is typically the development of loose, stretched breast skin. That said, patients can enhance both the volume and positioning of their breasts by combining their breast augmentation with a breast lift if their goals also include correcting a sagging appearance.

Furthermore, Dr. Ayala states that patients should be prepared to make decisions about their breast implants besides determining an ideal size and comparing “saline” versus “silicone.” There are many options when it comes to how implants can be inserted and placed, and the right choices for your unique needs and body frame will depend on your desires for the outcome. While this can make the procedure seem overwhelming, Dr. Ayala reassures patients that their plastic surgeon will be available at every stage of the consultation process to discuss pros and cons, as well as extend personalized medical advice, to make the experience as seamless as possible.

When it comes to the recovery period, Dr. Ayala states that the healing process can take up to four to six weeks—although patients are often able to return to work and their daily routines much sooner. The final outcome of breast augmentation will also not be immediately apparent, as it can take time for swelling to fully resolve and for the newly placed breast implants to “settle” into a natural-looking positioning. However, with patience, those who undergo breast augmentation should be able to enjoy their new contours for years—and even decades—to come.

Most importantly, Dr. Ayala states that your results ultimately depend on the experience and skill of your plastic surgeon. This highlights the necessities of diligent research and an initial consultation before selecting a doctor to perform your breast augmentation.
