In its continuing effort to honor those lost in the Pulse tragedy, The 49 Fund  will be awarding scholarships in the amount of $4,900 each for local college students. They will be congratulating the 2019 recipients with the help of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, and Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan.

The 49 Fund was created in March 2017 in a by local attorney and entrepreneur Barry L. Miller. Since inception 20 students have been awarded $4,900 each. Miller, who is the President of The Closing Agent, has raised the funds for the scholarships. Barry Miller also supports the community as President of CFGALLA (Central Florida Gay & Lesbian Law Association.) CFGALLA hosts free monthly clinics at the LGBT Center in Orlando & Kissimmee.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must be self-identified as ‘out’ and a member of the LGBT community, attend an accredited two- or four-year institution of higher learning on a full-time basis, earn a 3.0 GPA or higher and demonstrate a commitment to improving the Central Florida community.

The 49 Fund works closely each year with local LGBT organizations to identify potential applicants from local high schools and universities. The scholarship committee reviews the applications and interviews applicants who demonstrate need and those who commit to take a leadership role in the community.

According to attorney Barry L. Miller, The 49 Fund at Central Florida Foundation will honor those whose lives were lost by providing a scholarship opportunity to LGBT students striving to make Central Florida a better place.

After the Pulse tragedy rocked our community three years ago, we are proud of how Orlando has demonstrated that we are a strong and vibrant city,” said Miller. “The 49 Fund scholarship recipients have all committed to taking a leadership role in the community to ensure we continue to grow, educate and flourish in the memory of those we lost at Pulse.”
