On January 1, 2020, Florida became the 11th state to adopt Remote Online Notarization and today, Barry L Miller, Esq. and The Closing Agent, LLC performed the first Remote Online closing. The closing took place in Orlando and the seller in the transaction was located in Port Orange, FL.
Until now, title companies were restricted to traditional in-person closings whereby buyers, sellers and witnesses had to be in the same room with a notary and include actual “wet ink signatures.” With this new legislation, the future of closing is officially here! Real estate transactions can now be conducted from the comfort of your home, office or virtually anywhere using secure technology providers within the parameters set forth by the State of Florida.
Not all notaries can conduct online notary services, the Florida Secretary of State is required to certify notaries after they complete a 2-hour course and examination. Barry L. Miller, Esq., President & CEO of The Closing Agent, LLC, was the first person approved to conduct online notarization. In addition, Lyliam Chau, the Assistant Vice President of The Closing Agent was the first women approved for online notary in Florida.
As a leader of the title industry, The Closing Agent, LLC has marked today with another first—the first Remote Online Notarized (RON) closing. Barry Miller, Esq. President & CEO of The Closing Agent, LLC, powered by Barry Miller Law said: “We’ve been looking forward to today for a long time. We couldn’t wait for the legislation to be enacted into law and conduct the first closing. This new law will save time, money and bring the utmost convenience to consumers and the industry.”
While other title companies will need to learn this new process for real estate closings, The Closing Agent has been conducting electronic closings in a hybrid mode since 2017. “With the passing of House Bill 409, we’re now able to offer a complete end-to-end digital closing experience to our customers,” Mr. Miller said. “We are in a fortunate position that we have been conducting out-of-state video closings for the last couple of years, so today was an exciting new step. We have been very eager to introduce this new way of closing to a whole new audience. Providing an efficient and seamless closing has always been our paramount concern. Remote Online Notarizations allow us to build upon this ideal and truly craft the closing experience around our customer’s needs.”
