The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has facilitated creation of the solar energy project in Berbera City in Somaliland. This project will establish a local power grid and supply enough electricity to meet the needs of about 50000 citizens. The project has taken up 29.3 million and will produce 7 megawatts from the Berbera Hybrid Mini-grid Project, revolutionizing the city’s appearance. The project will stir up economic development and minimize the carbon emissions that the country has recorded over the years. Additionally, the project will accelerate the expansion of the Berbera city to become a commercialized city.
The vice president of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Abdilahi Ismail, unveiled the project with the help of the Minister of Energy and Minerals, Jama Mohamoud Egal, and other important executives from the two contracting sides. The director of the ADFD, Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, stated his satisfaction over the completion of the project in less than a year. These remarks implied that the coronavirus pandemic could not restrict the completion of the project. He thanked all the engineers and officials who gave their best performance in actualizing the project. Suwaidi reiterated that this program would activate the economic uprising of Berbera and improve the lives of the inhabitants of this region. Employment opportunities will emerge through industrialization, and the region can focus on other prospects that will create profits like businesses.
