Will "Digital Human" really threaten the position of "real human"?

How can we coexist with digital humans

“Who’s the one that makes bank clerks nervous?”, “Renowned game maker introduced a new virtual human.”

We can hear news about the creation of virtual humans every day, from everywhere. Digital humans who not only looks like a human, but also actually work like humans are created in combination with AI, and it can be worrisome that there will be no place for "real people" like Sci-Fi movies.

KLleon restored Beethoven and Seo Yu-Gu with AI technology to be used as docents. Their lips move according to the speech.

However, if you look at another case of using AI humans recently, it does not seem to be the case. KLleon, a startup with "Deep Human" technology, which can generate virtual faces and voices close to real-time with one photo and 30 seconds of voice data, recently restored Beethoven and Seo Yu-gu, a realist in the late Joseon Dynasty, signaling the beginning of a world coexisting with digital humans. Because AI docents provides vivid experience as if person in history talks to you one-on-one, some reviews say that it’s better than real-person docent that is hard to make a reservation and has to be done as a group.

Technology is made by humans and developed in the direction for the people. If we think about and develop how digital humans can complement each other instead of the idea of replacing real people, we can make the world more convenient for real humans. What other ways can we use digital humans to help us take a step further into a better world?

Hey! Let’s learn Korean with BTS RM.

RM of BTS as your AI tutor

With the recent increase in the number of people working from home, now they can utilize their time used to be spent for commuting as free time. They have begun to learn something new such as foreign languages and coding during the free time. However, due to COVID-19, it is not easy to go out to do something. Online lectures could be alternatives, but learning online could be boring as people have to study alone, and they may give up if they don't understand the contents of the lectures, because the same lecture materials are provided to students, regardless of their levels.

Then, what if you can learn from a tutor who look exactly the same as your favorite celebrity and speaks the same way? Recently, the introduction of digital human AI Tutor is expanding due to the trend of "edtech," in which technologies such as AI are introduced in the field of education. AI tutor can help students concentrate better by setting the tutor's appearance with a face and voice as they want. If you are a fan of BTS, you can also study with a tutor who look and sound the same as RM of BTS. In addition to visual elements, it is possible to provide one-on-one customized coaching that collects and identifies student data. It provides repetitive learning and in-depth learning for contents that students frequently make mistakes or find difficult.

Sick for 7 years was because of the morning show?

MBN's “Virtual Reporter Vote” event

The early morning broadcasting video posted on SBS announcer's official YouTube channel, "SBS Announcer," attracted many people's attention. An announcer in the video said, "I thought I had been broadcasting early in the morning without being nervous. I went to a long-term overseas training for work, and the disease I suffered during the early morning broadcast in Korea was healed as if I had washed away. "I've been living in a state of extreme tension for seven years since I started broadcasting, without knowing," she said, expressing the pressure and burden of early morning broadcasting.

As such, numerous efforts of announcers are required for a report. How about creating an AI announcer who can learn real people's videos and voices so that they can speak the same way as real people, or set their appearance and voice as desired? Not only can it ease the burden of morning broadcasting experienced by existing announcers, but it can also be quickly produced and transmitted by entering lines into AI announcers without related personnel presented even in urgent situations.

The fact that digital humans' appearance and voice can be set tells you that digital humans can also be used to build brand images for each broadcaster. Recently, MBN took the lead in building a brand image through digital humans as a "virtual reporter selection event." People could select a virtual reporter who would represent MBN by talking directly to four virtual journalist candidates with virtual faces and voices created by "Deep Human" technology and voted for their favorite reporters. One participant said, "I heard a lot of digital human stories, but I didn't know that it had developed to a level where face-to-face conversations were possible." "I think it will be very helpful when it is difficult for people to broadcast directly, such as reporting breaking news or during the early morning hours," he said.

Safety and immersion, catch two birds with one stone.

Science Center Singapore to build a virtual astronaut AI docent

Due to the recent pandemic, it is becoming difficult to hear direct explanations from docents in museums and art galleries. In addition, most of the time, it is difficult to listen the docent's explanation one-on-one, so visitors may lose concentration and interest. Gyeonggi Art Center has attracted the attention of visitors by introducing AI docent for the first time in the world to the exhibition hall. Through deep human technology, Beethoven, who exists only in paintings, could become a digital human and tell his own story, or Seo Yu-gu, who has been reborn as a young figure, told the history.

Meanwhile, AI docent, which was created with KLleon's deep human technology, is in the spotlight not only in Korea but also in abroad. Science Center Singapore collaborates with KLleon to provide a virtual tour guide which look like an astronaut that explains the exhibits when visitors scan the QR code attached around the exhibition work with a smartphone. An official from Science Center Singapore said, "We have high expectations for the educational effects of the virtual tour guide to be introduced in the future through more realistic exhibition descriptions."

Beyond transportation, it's a complex cultural space.

Hyundai Motor's vehicle virtual avatar

From February 10, 2022, the first self-driving taxi in Sangam-dong in Seoul, South Korea became an official means of transportation. It represents that the commercialization of autonomous vehicles is not far away. When self-driving cars are commercialized, it will be an era of so-called "Hands-Free" driving, in which drivers do not have to hold the steering wheel or pedal while driving. It is not long before cars will now be a place to enjoy leisure time or work, not a place to drive. What if you could control the car while doing various activities? Digital humans for vehicles can play that role.

Even if it is not necessarily for an autonomous vehicle, a digital human can play various roles. It not only serves as a simple navigation system, but also helps maintain the driver's hands-free state through two-way communication with the driver. Hyundai Motor Company is planning to introduce a digital human for vehicles created with deep human technology. When customers rent a vehicle and drives in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace, they can serve as a kind of customized travel agency by providing tour services, which is more than car rental, such as telling stories about Gyeongbokgung Palace, introducing nearby tourist attractions, or booking accommodations.

While digital humans, which can be used endlessly in various industries, are receiving great attention, they can also be worrying and are criticized that AI may replace people's jobs. However, there are also examples in which digital humans can rather help us. In the field of education, it can increase students' learning efficiency and effectiveness, and it can replace early morning broadcasts or urgent broadcasts that are difficult for people to perform, as virtual humans are not affected by time and space. In addition, you can hear explanations of exhibits without having to face people at the museum and you engage in various activities other than driving in vehicles.

As such, digital humans often have a positive effect on the lives of more people, and demand is expected to increase in more industries and companies in the future. KLone, which can customize faces, races, genders, and voices through KLleon's deep human technology, will be launched in the first half of this year. The official launch of the KLone will facilitate the production of digital humans, which will allow them to meet digital humans in more diverse fields in the future.
